SSAT:

Open letter to parents whose children will take the SSAT (or ISEE*)

Dear Parents:

This fall and winter many area students will take the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test), a test required at many secondary schools. The SSAT is designed by the SSAT Admissions Board to provide a common measure of a student's ability and, additionally, to provide admission officers and parents with the best possible insight into the strengths of individual applicants as they pertain to the selective school curricula and programs.

The SSAT is a multiple-choice test that consists of verbal, quantitative (math) and reading comprehension sections and a writing sample. Designed for students in grades 5-11, the SSAT is divided into two levels, the Upper (grades 8-11) and the Lower ((grades 5-7). Test questions are written by high school and college teachers and by SSAT Board and Educational Testing Service specialists. They are deemed to be fair and unbiased and representative of the kinds of skills necessary for a student to succeed in a secondary independent school placement.

Learning Power LLC has had over 27 years of experience and excellent success in preparing independent and public school students for a broad variety of standardized tests, and surveys of students who enrolled in past SSAT courses indicate that they benefited from the individualized attention they receive in small classes.

Learning Power instructors also help students deal with test anxiety, offering effective recommendations.

We are confident that Learning Power's SSAT instruction will provide your son or daughter with the most effective exposure to the real SSAT and the best confidence-building techniques and practice. Please give us a call if you have further questions.

Sincerely,

Linda E. Nelson, Executive Director
